CHAPTER 17

Brett pulled Rhianne onto the dance floor, where other couples were already swaying to the music. It’s Probably Me by Eric Clapton played in the background, with the bluesy guitar and a soulful sax setting a relaxed mood. Brett turned out to be a good dancer.

“Well, I’m impressed,” Rhianne said.

Brett smiled, his eyes dancing with amusement. “About the bottle and the crystal? I said I wouldn’t reveal my secrets.”

“Oh, not that,” Rhianne said. “You can actually dance.”

Brett almost paused mid-step as he laughed. “Was there a compliment hidden in that insult?”

“You can decide.”

“You are definitely the Lady Councillor’s daughter.” Brett’s eyes crinkled. “I like a challenge.”

“Do you, now? So, are you in your element in these succession challenges then? Do you mean to win?” Rhianne let Brett guide her into a twirl and back again.

“I wouldn’t be in them if I didn’t intend to win.”

“You have some fierce competition, and nothing is ever certain, is it?” she pushed.

Brett’s smile widened as he dipped her. “True, but that’s what makes it all the more thrilling, don’t you think?”

“I hadn’t pegged you as a thrill-seeker. Aren’t lawyers supposed to be risk-averse.”

Brett grinned. “Disappointed?”

“It’s hard to be when I know nothing about you.”

Brett swayed her from side to side and then pulled her into a graceful spin. “That’s easily remedied. Why don’t you have dinner with me? I know a wonderful Italian restaurant, intimate and quiet.”

“I think you’ll be busy with the challenges for the next week, won’t you? And perhaps after that, if you are successful, you won’t have time for me.” Rhianne was grateful for all the dance lessons her mother had put her through. Not that she’d tell her that.

“I’d never be too busy for a date with a beautiful lady. Just so you know, winning wouldn’t deter me from being with you.” He glanced over at where his father was. “I’m sure both our parents would be delighted with us seeing each other. And I,” he added before she could respond, “couldn’t think of anyone better as a future Alpha’s girlfriend.”

Rhianne nearly stepped on his foot. On purpose. “I don’t live to please my mother, hard as that may be to believe. Besides, I’m seeing someone right now.”

Brett didn’t miss a beat, as if the fact she was seeing someone else was insignificant. “You don’t know me well yet. I’d love the opportunity to show you I can make a great partner.”

“Well, you’ve shown me you’re not shy at being forward.” She lifted one corner of her mouth.

He laughed. “You’re incredibly refreshing. Do you dislike the idea of being an Alpha’s wife?”

“Wow, you’re getting way ahead of yourself. We’ve already agreed you have some serious competition.” Rhianne decided a gamble could work. “I imagine Roland is quite competitive and aggressive, and he seems keen on being the next Alpha.”

Brett snorted. “Roland and I grew up together in the pack. He’s all bark and bite. He’s a tad too prone to violence, and we don’t want that for the pack.
